Developing Student Ownership: Support Students to Move Beyond Doing and Understanding School to Owning Their Learning

Students are not merely passengers in their education. They deserve to go beyond just doing or understanding school—they deserve to own their learning. This means giving students the authority, capacity, and responsibility to know what they are learning and why, explain how they learn best, articulate when they are learning and when they are struggling, and understand their role in any academic setting. Inquiry-Based Instruction Through Texts of High Complexity Ensures Academic Rigor and Critical Thinking

Through nimble questioning, students are invited to think rather than being told what to think. In this session, participants will convene around a common text and engage in a sequence of activities that scaffold the depth of student-centered knowledge acquisition. After this experience, teachers will have the opportunity to reflect on the pedagogy that promotes inquiry and equips students with the nimble habits of mind of effective critical thinkers. Teachers will leave with the understanding that when students engage in Inquiry-Based Learning, they own their thinking and we hear their voices.
